The start

Silverrudder™ Challenge 2018 - Statutes

  1. Silverrudder™ Challenge is arranged once a year with start and finish in Svendborg. The race is sailed singlehanded around Funen. The direction depends on the wind direction and weather forecast. The start is at the autumn equinox, usually during the 3rd. or 4th. weekend of September.
    For 2018 the start date is 21st. September.
  2. For Silverrudder™ Challenge, seven trophies have been awarded. The holder of a Silverrudder™ Challenge trophy is obliged to return the trophy so that this is in the hands of Svendborg Amatør Sejlklub before the start of the following year’s Silverrudder™ Challenge of the Sea.
    A trophy is awarded to each of the following categories. All measurements are in feet (1 feet = 0.3048m) according to Length Overall (LOA) as per World Sailing definition.

    Keel boats:
    From 18.00 to 25.00 feet incl.
    From 25.01 to 30.00 feet incl.
    From 30.01 to 35.00 feet incl.
    From 35.01 to 40.00 feet incl.
    From 40.01 feet and upwards
    From 18.00 to 28.00 feet incl.
    From 28.01 feet and upwards.

  3. The winner of each category is the fastest skipper to singlehanded circumnavigate the island of Funen under sail in according to the Sailing Instructions. Sailing times will be recorded for each category, and the boat from each category holding the fastest circumnavigation to date, retains the Silverrudder™ Challenge trophy until this record is broken. SILVERRUDDER record holders are required to return the trophy to Svendborg Amatør Sejlklub before the start of the following years SILVERRUDDER race.

  4. Challengers for Silverrudder™ Challenge can only participate and perform if they have signed up, paid the starting fee and performed the race in accordance with the Sailing Instructions.

  5. Any suitable seaworthy sailing craft can sign up for the Silverrudder™ Challenge. Svendborg Amatør Sejlklub has the right to reject any boat which is deemed unseaworthy and of an inappropriate safety standard.

  6. As Silverrudder™ Challenge is a singlehand race, only one and same person shall be onboarded the boat during the race around Funen.

  7. The race is performed in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) and in accordance with the governing Sailing Instructions for Silverrudder™ Challenge.

  8. All challengers must carry a tracking system handed out before the race so that the race can be monitored and displayed on various media platforms. When signing up for participation, competitors also agree to return their tracker and any other related items promptly after the race.

  9. Challenging boats can fly a stern pennant with a sponsor logo and / or the Silverrudder™ Challenge logo. Stickers with start number and Silverrudder™ Challenge and sponsor logo must be attached to each side of the hull(s). These items will be available the day before the start. It is the responsibility of each participant to carefully attach the stickers to the hull(s) as foremost as possible from the bow of the boat in a manner, that reduces the risk of stickers falling off and harming the environment.
    All boats must display clear numbers or unique logo on their main sail.

  10. All participants must be contactable via either handheld or stationary VHF radio.

  11. It is the responsibility of the skipper that the boat…
    11.1 - is in a safe and seaworthy condition and has fixed statutory navigation lights that are applied in accordance with the International Rules for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). Boats of less than 7 meters in length shall however have fixed navigation lights as required for boats of 7 meters or more in length as per COLREGS.
    11.2 - is equipped with the following mandatory safety equipment:
    - Life jacket
    - Safety harness
    - Fixed safety line/jackstay along the deck for attachment of the safety harness
    - VHF radio – handheld (incl. batteries for a realistic estimated sailing time) or stationary
    - 2 handheld flares, within expiry date (wheel marked according to Directive 2014/93/EU)
    - 2 distress rockets, within expiry date (wheel marked according to Directive 2014/93/EU) 
    - Fire extinguisher
    - Bucket or bailer
    - First aid kit
    - Powerful flashlight and / or head lamp
    - Knife
    - Suitable anchor with anchor chain / line ready for immediate use
    By his signature on receipt of the tracking system and start number, the skipper confirms that all of the above compulsory safety equipment is onboard.

  12. All challengers must no later than upon receipt of the start number provide the Safety Committee with their mobile phone number and phone number of a contact person ashore.

    Each participating boat must have a valid third-party liability insurance.
    NOTE: Proof of cover must be shown upon safety check.

  14. These statutes are available in an English, German and Danish version. If there is a conflict between languages, the English text shall prevail.

  15. Any breach of the above statutes will result in disqualification.
